Bringing a Tech-Forward Vision for the NBA Store Flagship

What began as a request for exterior façade ideation quickly evolved into something far more ambitious—and far more exciting. When Lids approached idX Corporation’s in-house design team, Studio 400, to explore new ways to modernize and elevate their retail presence, our team leaned into what we do best: forward-thinking design rooted in brand storytelling, material innovation, and customer experience.

The initial concepts resonated immediately, and our team’s disciplined, solutions-focused approach helped transform that early ideation into a fully realized flagship opportunity—the complete design and development of the NBA Store located at Mall of America. This flagship location was envisioned as more than a retail environment. It was an opportunity to capture the energy, athleticism, and cultural impact of the NBA in a space that feels immersive, modern, and future-ready, while also demonstrating how strengthening our core design, engineering, and execution disciplines creates enduring value for our customers.

A Concept Built from the Ground Up

The site previously housed a high-end streetwear retailer, meaning the Studio 400 team was tasked with starting entirely from scratch—reimagining the store layout, fixtures, ceiling treatments, mannequins, and experiential zones without the benefit of reusable infrastructure.

Every design decision was intentional, from the stripped-back base palette that allows NBA team colors to command attention, to the reinterpretation of familiar basketball elements such as netting, line work, bleacher seating, and the visual language of court materials, all grounded in strong fundamentals around material performance, manufacturability, and usability for store teams.

The result is a dynamic, tech-forward environment that balances performance retail with storytelling, highlighting product while celebrating the “magic of the NBA” through movement, scale, and materiality—and introducing thoughtful, future-ready solutions that anticipate how the space will need to evolve over time.

Collaboration and Technical Execution

This project was a true team effort—led by idX Corporation, supported by sister company Quest Design & Millwork for project management, and powered by the creative vision of Studio 400, idX’s in-house design team, all operating with a shared culture of ownership, accountability, and excellence. Manufacturing and fabrication were driven by idX Toronto, leveraging advanced capabilities to deliver custom fixtures and architectural elements with precision.

Installation within an active mall environment introduced unique challenges, including restricted access hours and tight service corridors, demanding disciplined planning and tight coordination across teams. These were overcome through phased scheduling, prefabrication, and close coordination with mall management and multiple trades to minimize disruption, waste, and rework. Where existing conditions required adjustments, solutions were implemented swiftly and collaboratively, maintaining design integrity while reinforcing our commitment to operational efficiency and problem-solving.
